Throughout its history it has become a place of reflection, recreation and relaxation. The annual visitation can reach upwards of 500,000 people. Due to the high number of visitors, the vegetation within the reservation suffers from physiological problems due to root compaction and erosion. Over the years we have tried to combat this problem with public education and annual tree plantings, as well as various restoration projects within the reservation. The project we are proposing would allow us to continue these efforts in a collaborative, hands-on program designed to restore tree loss at some of the reservation’s most heavily used areas. We would be working with the Thoreau Society, a well-established local non-profit which serves as the friends’ group for Walden Pond, and local school groups and volunteers to plant native species. We are eager to partner with the MAA on this project as it is so clearly a part of the organization’s mission to promote proper tree care. This is an opportunity to be a part of a volunteer effort suitable for all ages that will include planting White Pine seedlings and a mix of other indigenous trees. We hope to plant approximately 100 trees so we need your help! Please join us in a great cause, one which will have a lasting impact on all visitors to Walden Pond. |
